I'm supporting Barack Obama

What an exciting time it is to be alive! After watching Barack Obama announce this morning that he's running for President of the United States, I'll just say straight up that he's the one I'll be supporting for the Democratic nomination and President. He has my vote no ifs, ands or buts about it.

The way he made his announcement standing in front of the Old State Capitol in Springfield, Illinois in the freezing cold, in front of Hundreds of cheering supporters made chills run down my spine. I couldn't help but think that there's a real good chance more likely than not that Barack Obama will be the first black President of the United States. Let's be honest... He's no Alan Keyes, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton or Carol Mosely-Braun. This guy has an actual shot at the White House and I'm gonna do whatever it takes to help him accomplish that, together.

Barack Obama said:

"It is because men and women of every race, from every walk of life, continued to march for freedom long after Lincoln was laid to rest, that today we have the chance to face the challenges of this millennium together, as one people - as Americans."...

"So let us begin. Let us begin this hard work together. Let us transform this nation."

"Politics doesn't have to divide us on this anymore - we can work together to keep our country safe. I've worked with Republican Senator Dick Lugar to pass a law that will secure and destroy some of the world's deadliest, unguarded weapons. We can work together to track terrorists down with a stronger military, we can tighten the net around their finances, and we can improve our intelligence capabilities."

"It must be about us - it must be about what we can do together."

"Together, starting today, let us finish the work that needs to be done, and usher in a new birth of freedom on this Earth."

"what has he ever done besides being a scumbag lawyer?"

He had enough sense to know that invading Iraq was a bad idea for starters...

Floor Statement of Senator Barack Obama on Iraq Debate
Wednesday, June 21, 2006

Mr. President, in October of 2002, I delivered a speech opposing the War in Iraq.

I said that Saddam Hussein was a ruthless man, but that he posed no imminent and direct threat to the United States.

I said that a war in Iraq would take our focus away from our efforts to defeat al-Qaeda.

And, with a volatile mix of ethnic groups and a complicated history, I said that the invasion and occupation of Iraq would require a U.S. occupation of undetermined length, at undetermined cost, with undetermined consequences.

In short, I felt the decision unfolding then to invade Iraq was being made without a clear rationale, based more on ideology and politics than fact and reason.

Scumbag lawyer? Try community activist for pittance pay when he could have had the pick of law firms.

Doncha just love anonymous drive-by commenters?
